Emergency Calls Only Signal

I’ve recently switched to a new sim with the hopes of being able to save money. Most of my friends and Amy of course use Globe sims. Signing up for a plan to save money and promos over their mobile network was quite a temptation to boot. I’ve used Smart Communication’s service for 3 years on a prepaid sim.  Since I rarely use my phone to connect with my friends since I stay at home 5 days a week for work.

After waiting a week or so for the sim to be activated via their base station, Globe just informed me my sim was activated 24 hours after I singed up for the plan. Unfortunately, my phone has been quite useless since. Signal was like catching fish with a flyswatter. In other words, where my Smart sim had the full bar signal inside my room, on my Globe sim, it never showed a hint of civilization. Nobody could ever contact me through my phone in this situation, that’s for sure. I did however have a full bar signal on the emergency calls network only.

A little research told me that this signal is still actually a mobile phone frequency but on another network. Networks here in the Philippines abide to a policy where you can use their network signal to make emergency calls. Now that is weird. I thought Globe Telecoms with their highly paid promotion sure has to be the best one against Smart Communication’s boring advertisements on TV and billboards.

I soon realized that Globe is owned by Singapore Telecommunications and Ayala Corporation. That should be a good thing right? Everyone knows Sing Tel and Ayala. But fact of the matter is, Globe with its highly recognized owners and shareholders were decades younger when it cames to telecommunications. Smart Communications on the other hand is owned subsidiary by PLDT (Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company), which has been in the telecommunications industry since 1928. Surely, with that age, they’ve invested in both technology and service satisfaction.

It’s a lesson learned for me. I should have researched more about these thing before making the switch. Good thing I didn’t have my plan together with a phone unit. I could have it stopped anytime to boot and just go back to a Smart sim. But let me take this opportunity to say that Globe sucks big time. Where a Smart frequency was at high, the Globe signal was a lame-o.
